I’ve been itching to put up our Christmas tree for the past week or two. It has something to do with holiday season setting in at my retail job (malls start decorating before Halloween), but I’ve also always loved Christmas. I have to admit I love it a little less now that I work retail, mostly because of the occasional grinches that come in (demanding, rude, snippy) and how commercial everything is. I guess I was hoping everybody would be imbued with the Christmas spirit and full of love or something, ha.
That said, I love the family, friend, craft, gifting, and cooking aspects of the holiday. And I love to decorate! Continue reading
So, I got this message from a friend last week.
“Hello!. How’ve you been, hood mother? [side note–long story on that nickname] ok, so I know you’re an amazing cook because I’ve seen your posts and I was wondering if you had any recipes for southern oven baked Mac n Cheese. I somehow got assigned this task for thanksgiving. I hope you can help me out! thanks!”
Well, I hate cheese (I know, what kind of Italian hates cheese), so I don’t have a special recipe for mac and cheese. But Ryan is a big fan of cheese, and brags far and wide about his mac n cheese. He has a special family recipe, so I asked write it up for us. While I was at work, he made a batch, took pictures, and wrote the following post! I had no idea he planned on doing any of these things. Without further ado, here’s Ryan.
Something you should know about Ryan’s dad Tim is that he makes the best blackberry pie. No qualifying statements necessary. Best blackberry pie. Period. Continue reading
This afternoon at the grocery store, my inner southerner wanted ham. Not a lot of ham. Ham gets tired really fast. And too salty. I crave ham maybe twice a year, max. And I would never, ever buy a whole ham, or even most of a ham. So I bought a ham steak. Continue reading
The calendar says it’s the middle of November, but you wouldn’t know it based on the weather we’ve been having here. Continue reading
This weekend, Ryan’s dad is in town, after guest speaking at a conference. He’s fancy stuff. But he also shares Ryan’s love of the ocean and of fishing, so we were clearly headed for the beach this weekend.

Hello readers! I’m sorry I’ve been gone for so long, and I owe you an explanation.
We had roaches. It was awful. We had battled them for 2 months! Pretty much since Ryan’s birthday. We caught them from the people who lived below us, who were apparently druggy hoarders and contracted roaches, then they spread to their neighbors. Then the building sprayed, and they went upward, so my neighbors and we got roaches. It’s been a mess, we’ve done battle with an unhelpful landlord, and most importantly, we haven’t had a kitchen for 2 months, since everything from our kitchen and bathroom had to be moved out, so we relocated everything into bags in our living room. And waited. And they sprayed poison. And we waited. And they sprayed more poison. And finally, knock on so much wood, we may be roach free. So we’ve reassembled our kitchen and are moving on with our lives.
I apologize for not explaining where I was. I have so many things I’ve wanted to cook and bake, and so many things to share, but I just haven’t had the time, energy, or spirit, due to our disgusting infestation. Which wasn’t our fault, which is probably the worst part.
So anyway, I’m back! Many posts coming soon! Thanks for bearing with me : )
